Decoding 510: A Beginners Guide to Understanding the Meaning

Yesterday, my buddy texted me, “Dude, we totally 510’d that project!” I was like, “Huh? 510’d? What’s that?” I’d never heard that term before. So, naturally, I started digging.

My Initial Search

First, I hit up Urban Dictionary. You know, the place for all the slang you can’t find anywhere else. Nothing. I typed in “510,” “510 meaning,” “510 slang” – got zip. Just a bunch of random definitions about area codes and car models. Clearly, that wasn’t it.

Broadening the Search

Then I moved on to Google. I figured maybe it was some new internet meme or something. Again, mostly results about Nissan cars (the Datsun 510, apparently a classic) and California area codes. I even tried adding “slang” and “urban” to my search terms. Still nothing that made sense in the context of my friend’s text.

Asking Around

I started to get a little frustrated. Next, I asked some other friends if they’d ever heard of “510” as slang. I texted a few group chats, even posted on my social media. Mostly, I got blank stares (or the digital equivalent). A couple of people suggested it might be a local thing, specific to my buddy’s group.

Getting to the Source

Finally, I decided to go straight to the source. I texted my buddy back and just asked him, “Hey, what did you mean by ‘510’d’?”

The “Aha!” Moment

Turns out, it was a super local thing! He explained that it was a reference to a specific inside joke within their project team. They had a task that was originally estimated to take 5 hours, then got extended to 10. They use the “5” and “10” now to state anything quick and/or easy.

So, “510’d” meant they’d completely crushed it, taken an easy route, like extending 5 to 10.

My takeaway

  • Sometimes, the internet doesn’t have all the answers, especially when it comes to super-niche slang.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask! It’s often the fastest way to get the information you need.
  • Inside jokes can be powerful (and confusing to outsiders!).

It was a bit of a wild goose chase, but hey, I learned something new. And now I can use “510” with the best of them… well, at least with that one friend.
